A facilitator is an entity that verifies and settles payments between buyers and sellers.

Key Functions

  • Verifies payment payloads submitted by buyers
  • Settles payments on the blockchain on behalf of the sellers

About Facilitators

  • Facilitators are (optionallly) independent entities from the buyers and sellers bringing their own security and compliance offerings
  • Facilitators are in charge of settling the onchain transactions. This means that facilitators have to deal with scalability, gas costs, and other onchain complexities and costs. With growing usage, facilitators will need to find ways to optimize and offset their costs
  • With x402 being introduced in early-mid 2025, there is no regulatory framework in place for facilitators. This means that facilitators today are responsible for their own compliance and risk management (not legal advice).
